Carringbush has been delivering high quality English as an Additional Language programs in Yarra since 1984. Programs include State and Federal Government foundation programs, as well as specialised pre-accredited classes.

Accredited Courses

Carringbush delivers accredited early childhood and English language courses.

Early childhood: The CHC30121 Early childhood education and care course is delivered free from tuition fees. A resources fee of $120.00 is payable.

English courses: The English language courses are available through:

  • Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) funded by Commonwealth Department of Home Affairs

  • Skills First Program funded by Victorian Department of Education and Training

  • Fee for service

Classes range from pre-Certificate I to Certificate III and are delivered from a number of locations around Richmond and Collingwood, as well as delivered partially online using accessible platforms.  

Learners may be eligible to receive further support to participate online.

2023 Courses


Course information:

The successful completion of this course will give you an early childhood educator qualification required to work in a regulated children’s education and care setting supporting children’s wellbeing and development. Early childhood educators work in long day care centres, family day care, pre-schools or kindergartens.

Students will undertake work placement in an early childhood centre during their training, where they can use their skills that they are learning in class on the job, as well as gain further skills in the workplace. Carringbush will assist students in gaining work placement.

  • Delivered over 32 weeks consisting of a combination of classroom and work placement
  • 17 units of competency
  • 200 hours of work placement in an early childhood centre
  • All classes are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9.30am to 3.00pm with a lunch break
  • Language and literacy support will be available each Friday from 9.30 am to 3.00 pm for each week of the course for those students identified as needing assistance.
  • Classes are held in Richmond
  • Assessment methods include written work, role play, scenarios, observation in the workplace by the trainer and workplace supervisor reports
  • Working with Children and Police checks required
  • Some early childhood centres may require students undertaking work placement to wear a mask and produce evidence of vaccination

Entry requirements

  • There are no entry requirements, however all applicants will undertake a pre-training review to determine their literacy level.

Course information:
The course is for pre-literate learners including those arriving from conflict zones and refugee camps who have experienced different levels of trauma with severely interrupted education and little or no previous education or learning experiences. Learners develop an identity as they establish learning routines and develop basic decoding and encoding skills and handwriting skills such as copying and hand-eye coordination.

  • Delivered over 40 weeks consisting of a combination of classroom and online teaching.
  • 6 units of competency
  • Enrolments are taken at any time during the year.
  • All classes are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9.30am to 3.00pm (or earlier depending on the units).
  • Classes are held in Richmond

22482VIC Course in Initial EAL

Course information:

The course is for participants who have little prior educational experience or whose circumstances have resulted in disrupted education and who need to develop initial level basic English speaking, listening, reading and writing, numeracy and learning skills prior to accessing further English language education and possible employment.

  • Delivered over 40 weeks consisting of a combination of classroom and online teaching.
  • 9 units of competency
  • Enrolments are taken at any time during the year.
  • All classes are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9.30am to 3.00pm (or earlier depending on the units).

Course information:

The course focuses on the development of English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills directly related to immediate personal and social needs together with electives selected to develop relevant social, settlement and numeracy skills and knowledge. The purpose of this qualification is preparation for participation in further English language study or vocational training which may include English language support or employment.

  • Delivered over 40 weeks consisting of a combination of classroom and online teaching.
  • 8 units of competency
  • Enrolments are taken at any time during the year.

Course information:

This course focuses on the development of English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to develop relevant knowledge and skills for simple everyday communication and community participation and to enable participants to move into further English language education or vocational training or a combination of both, or employment.

  • Delivered over 40 weeks consisting of a combination of classroom and online teaching.
  • 8 units of competency

This course focuses on the consolidation of English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills so that participants can access a range of further and vocational education options which may require some specialisation. Participants include those who have been out of the workforce for a period and wish to further develop English language skills and research pathway options or seek employment.

Adult Literacy Programs

Help with adults who want to improve their reading,  writing, spelling and digital literacy skills. Content is individualized and can range from basic skills,  up to the level  needed for work or a course of study.

Programs are delivered at our site in Richmond and at community agencies in  Collingwood.
